Overview
William F. Fox Elementary School is a historic Richmond educational landmark originally constructed in 1911 and reconstructed following a devastating fire in February 2022. The project restored and modernized the century-old school while preserving its historic architectural character and creating a contemporary learning environment for students and staff. Thompson Consulting Engineers provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services, Construction Administration, and Commissioning, integrating high-efficiency HVAC, lighting and controls, and modern building infrastructure within the constraints of the historic structure. The resulting systems support improved comfort, indoor air quality, energy performance, and life safety while allowing the revitalized school to continue serving the Richmond community for generations to come.
Challenges
- Providing efficient MEP systems while preserving the historic integrity and architectural character of the building.
- Accommodating new HVAC and electrical systems within limited historic envelope space.
