Overview
Virginia State University’s M.T. Carter Annex is a 13,600-square-foot research and academic facility developed to expand the University’s capacity for advanced agricultural research and support the evolving mission of its College of Agriculture. Located adjacent to the existing M.T. Carter Agricultural Research Facility, the Annex provides flexible laboratory environments, faculty offices, collaborative spaces, and a multipurpose auditorium supporting research in food science, environmental and plant science, animal science, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and other emerging agricultural fields. Thompson Consulting Engineers provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design, Construction Administration, and Commissioning services for the project, with building systems engineered to meet the environmental and operational requirements of specialized laboratory spaces while emphasizing energy efficiency and ease of maintenance. The facility strengthens Virginia State University’s research infrastructure while providing adaptable environments capable of supporting new technologies, interdisciplinary collaboration, and future advances in agricultural science.
