Responsibilities
What You'll Do
Mechanical Systems Design
- Design mechanical building systems, including HVAC systems, central plants, and associated building infrastructure.
- Perform engineering studies, system analyses, calculations, equipment selection, and mechanical system layouts.
- Prepare complete programming documents, schematic designs, design development documents, and construction drawings.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, industry standards, and Thompson Consulting Engineers' quality control procedures.
Project Leadership
- Collaborate with clients to develop and validate project scope and design objectives.
- Manage the mechanical scope of projects while working with project managers to meet budgets, schedules, contract requirements, and client expectations.
- Coordinate mechanical design with architects, owners, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Perform quality control reviews and support continuous improvement across the mechanical department.
Construction Administration & Commissioning
- Provide engineering support throughout bidding and construction.
- Prepare addenda and respond to contractor questions during bidding.
- Review RFIs, shop drawings, and field conditions during construction while representing the firm on-site as required.
- Support commissioning activities, including commissioning proposals, plans, reports, project reviews, Pre-Functional Checks (PFCs), Functional Performance Tests (FPTs), and Operation & Maintenance Support Information (OMSI) documentation.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor junior engineers and designers while supporting their professional development.
- Demonstrate strong leadership and sound engineering judgment throughout all phases of project delivery.
- Foster a collaborative, client-focused environment built on technical excellence and responsive service.
Qualifications
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Virginia.
- Eight or more years of experience designing mechanical building systems.
- Experience working on K-12, municipal, commercial, office, retail, data center, government, and similar building projects.
- Proficiency with the latest versions of AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication, organization, and critical thinking skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Virginia.
- LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP).
- Previous experience leading project teams and mentoring junior engineers.
- Construction administration and commissioning experience.
- Strong commitment to client service, technical quality, and continuous professional growth.
