Responsibilities
What You'll Do
Plumbing Systems Design
- Design plumbing systems, including domestic water, sanitary waste, storm drainage, natural gas, and specialty piping systems.
- Perform engineering studies, system analyses, calculations, equipment selection, and plumbing system layouts.
- Prepare programming documents, schematic designs, design development documents, and construction drawings.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, industry standards, and Thompson Consulting Engineers' quality control procedures.
Project Coordination
- Collaborate with clients to develop and validate project scope and design objectives.
- Manage the plumbing scope of projects while working with project managers to meet budgets, schedules, contract requirements, and client expectations.
- Coordinate plumbing design with architects, owners, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Support quality control reviews and contribute to continuous improvement across the plumbing department.
Construction Administration
- Provide engineering support throughout bidding and construction.
- Prepare addenda and respond to contractor questions during bidding.
- Review RFIs, shop drawings, and field conditions during construction while representing the firm on-site as required.
- Support successful project delivery through responsive communication and technical problem-solving.
Professional Growth
- Continue developing technical expertise in plumbing system design and applicable building codes.
- Build strong relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal project teams.
- Contribute to a collaborative environment focused on technical excellence, innovation, and exceptional client service.
Qualifications
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification in Virginia or the ability to obtain Virginia certification.
- Five to eight years of experience designing plumbing systems for commercial, educational, municipal, or similar facilities.
- Proficiency with the latest versions of AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication, organization, and critical thinking skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP).
- Construction administration experience.
- Experience working on K-12, higher education, municipal, commercial, or public safety projects.
- Knowledge of plumbing and fuel gas codes.
- Strong commitment to client service, technical quality, and continuous professional development.
