Overview
The Mary T. Christian Theatre at Virginia Peninsula Community College is a 496-seat performing arts venue within Templin Hall that serves as a center for theater, music, dance, visual arts, academic programming, and community events on the College’s Hampton Campus. Following a partial roof collapse in 2021, the facility underwent a comprehensive reconstruction that restored the College’s performing arts program while introducing an expanded stage and orchestra pit, improved backstage areas, and state-of-the-art theatrical lighting, sound, projection, and production systems. Thompson Consulting Engineers provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design, Construction Administration, and Commissioning services, coordinating specialized building systems with the demanding acoustic, environmental, electrical, and production requirements of a modern performance venue. Reopened in 2026, the revitalized theater provides students, performers, and the broader Peninsula community with an enhanced environment for artistic expression, education, and cultural engagement.
Challenges
- Replaced and integrated MEP systems within an existing structure following a roof collapse and significant building damage.
- Coordinated specialized systems required for theatrical performance, including stage lighting, controls, audiovisual infrastructure, and production equipment.
- Designed HVAC systems to maintain audience and performer comfort while addressing ventilation, acoustic sensitivity, and the varied occupancy demands of a performance venue.
