Principal, Chief Fiancial Officer

Joey Allen serves as Principal and Chief Financial Officer of Thompson Consulting Engineers, where he plays a critical role in guiding the firm’s financial strategy, operational performance, and long-term growth. Since joining the firm in 2010, Joey has become a key member of the leadership team, helping shape business decisions that support the company’s continued success. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Central Florida, is a licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina, and is a LEED Accredited Professional in Building Design and Construction (LEED AP BD+C). Joey is also an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

As Chief Financial Officer, Joey oversees financial planning and forecasting, budgeting, expense management, accounts receivable, monthly billing, and profitability analysis. Through mentorship from former CEO Mark Thompson and years of financial leadership experience, he has played a key role in evaluating tax and investment strategies that strengthen business operations, reduce liabilities, and support the firm’s long-term financial stability. His analytical approach provides valuable insight to the Board of Directors and helps ensure that business decisions align with Thompson’s strategic vision and core values.

In addition to his financial leadership responsibilities, Joey provides executive oversight for the firm’s Plumbing and Administrative Departments. He supports personnel planning, resource allocation, and staff development initiatives while helping maintain the quality and consistency of the firm’s plumbing engineering services. Joey also maintains an advisory role in mechanical quality control and contributes to the refinement of Thompson’s mechanical design standards and master specifications, helping ensure technical excellence across the organization.

Joey’s technical expertise includes sustainable design principles and practices, and he has completed Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) training while developing a strong working knowledge of the standards and procedures of the Division of Engineering and Buildings (DEB). As a Project Manager, he works directly with clients to initiate projects, define scopes of work, coordinate project teams, and ensure the timely delivery of high-quality results.

Beyond his operational and technical responsibilities, Joey actively supports the firm’s marketing and business development efforts through client engagement, strategic planning, and relationship development. His ability to bridge engineering, finance, and business operations makes him a valuable resource to both clients and colleagues.
