Joey Dunleavey, P.E.

Associate Principal, Director of Plumbing

Joey joined Thompson Consulting Engineers in 2020 as the first engineer in the firm’s Richmond office, marking a key milestone in the company’s expansion into the Central Virginia region. Since then, he has played an instrumental role in the success of numerous Mechanical, Plumbing, and Commissioning projects throughout Greater Richmond and Northern Virginia. A licensed Professional Engineer, Joey earned his P.E. in HVAC and Refrigeration Engineering in 2024 and his P.E. in Fire Protection Engineering in 2026, reflecting his commitment to technical excellence across multiple building systems disciplines. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from George Mason University, maintains certification in Plumbing Design in support of his leadership of the firm’s plumbing practice, and is an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE).

As a Project Manager, Joey oversees a diverse portfolio of projects — ensuring that each begins with clear communication, defined scope, and well-coordinated team assignments. Known for his precision, responsiveness, and client advocacy, he works closely with owners and stakeholders on project development, planning, and execution to deliver results that exceed expectations.

In addition to his project management responsibilities, Joey contributes to the development and maintenance of Thompson’s Master Specifications for Divisions 21, 22, and Commissioning. He also maintains design standards for Plumbing and Fire Protection systems, ensuring the firm’s technical excellence remains consistent across disciplines.

Joey plays an active role in staff development, managing and training Mechanical and Plumbing interns in the Richmond office while fostering a collaborative, hands-on learning environment. His leadership and mentorship have helped shape a strong and growing team that reflects Thompson’s commitment to quality and innovation.

As a member of the firm’s marketing and business development team, Joey participates in client development and outreach efforts, contributing to proposal preparation and project scoping. Representing the firm at various industry events throughout the year, he continues to strengthen Thompson’s presence and relationships within the region.
