Overview
Thoroughgood Elementary School is a 91,913-square-foot, LEED Silver-certified educational facility developed for Virginia Beach City Public Schools as a net-zero-ready replacement for the former 62-year-old school. Designed around sustainability and flexible, collaborative learning, the facility incorporates extensive natural daylight, a highly efficient geothermal HVAC system, rainwater collection and reuse, and energy-efficient lighting while using building systems and sustainable features as opportunities for student learning. Thompson Consulting Engineers provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design, Construction Administration, and Commissioning services for the project. These integrated systems support exceptional energy performance, occupant comfort, water conservation, and long-term operational efficiency while advancing the school division’s broader sustainability goals.
