Overview
The Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center Maritime Welding Training Lab was developed to support workforce development and address the region's growing demand for skilled maritime and shipbuilding trades. The project transformed 3,167 square feet of existing space into a purpose-built instructional welding facility equipped for hands-on training in a controlled industrial learning environment. Thompson Consulting Engineers provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design, Construction Administration, and Commissioning services. Specialized ventilation, exhaust, electrical, and plumbing systems were integrated to support welding operations while maintaining safety, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency.
Challenges
- Designing localized ventilation and exhaust systems capable of capturing welding fumes and maintaining safe indoor air quality throughout the instructional space.
- Coordinating electrical infrastructure to support high-demand welding equipment, specialized training tools, and simultaneous student use.
