Kevin Allen serves as Principal and Chief Executive Officer of Thompson Consulting Engineers, where he is responsible for guiding the firm’s strategic direction, supporting its long-term growth, and upholding the company’s commitment to engineering excellence. Since joining Thompson in 1988, Kevin has played a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s culture, expanding its capabilities, and fostering the client-focused approach that continues to define the organization today. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University, is a licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Georgia, and is a LEED Accredited Professional. Kevin is also an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and an Allied Member of AIA Virginia.

With more than three decades of consulting engineering experience, Kevin brings extensive expertise in mechanical system design, energy analysis, life-cycle costing, problem-solving, and report preparation. His project experience spans educational and industrial facilities, central plants, and office buildings, with particular expertise in indoor air quality analysis, investigative and remedial engineering, and HVAC system commissioning. His technical insight continues to serve as a valuable resource for both clients and project teams throughout the firm.

In addition to his executive leadership responsibilities, Kevin serves as the firm’s Engineer of Record for Mechanical and Plumbing systems and acts as Thompson’s Mechanical and Plumbing Quality Control Agent. In these roles, he helps ensure that every project reflects the firm’s high standards for quality, coordination, innovation, and technical excellence. He also oversees the development and maintenance of design standards that support consistency and reliability across the organization.

Kevin plays an active role in business development and client engagement, maintaining strong relationships with clients, participating in project interviews, and helping secure opportunities that align with the firm’s mission and values. His ability to combine technical expertise with strategic leadership has been instrumental in Thompson Consulting Engineers’ continued growth and success.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Kevin is widely respected as a mentor and leader within the organization. He supports staff development, assists with recruiting and team growth initiatives, and fosters a culture built on collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
