Principal, Chief Operating Officer

Matt Haltiner serves as Principal and Chief Operating Officer of Thompson Consulting Engineers, where he helps guide the firm’s strategic growth, operational performance, and engineering excellence. Since joining the company in 2000, Matt has become a cornerstone of the firm’s leadership team and has played a significant role in expanding Thompson Consulting Engineers’ presence throughout Virginia. He studied Business Economics at Radford University, is a LEED Accredited Professional, and is an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

With nearly three decades of consulting engineering experience, Matt brings extensive expertise in mechanical engineering, design development, energy modeling, cost estimating, and construction administration. He is particularly interested in the forensic analysis of HVAC system performance and works closely with clients to evaluate facility maintenance and replacement needs, identify long-term strategies, and develop practical solutions that support building performance and operational efficiency.

As Mechanical Department Manager, Matt oversees the firm’s mechanical engineering operations, supporting staff development, project management, and technical excellence across the department. He provides mentorship and training to engineers and project managers while fostering collaboration among the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines to ensure coordinated and successful project delivery.

As Chief Operating Officer, Matt plays a key role in project planning, resource management, financial performance, and operational oversight throughout the organization. He works closely with project teams and firm leadership to establish priorities, support project execution, and maintain the high standards of quality, accountability, and client service that define Thompson Consulting Engineers.

Matt also serves as Director of Special Projects and is an active member of the firm’s marketing and business development team. He has been instrumental in expanding Thompson Consulting Engineers’ presence in the Richmond, Virginia Beach, and Northern Virginia markets while developing opportunities in energy services (ESCO), public-private partnerships (PPEA), design-build delivery, and direct client engagements. His ability to build strong relationships and identify innovative solutions continues to support the firm’s growth and long-term success.
