Overview
The James City County Law Enforcement Center is a modern police headquarters and forensic facility developed to consolidate the County’s law enforcement divisions and specialized operations within a secure, centralized environment. The facility brings administrative, patrol, investigative, forensic, evidence, training, and public-facing functions together under one roof, improving coordination while providing specialized infrastructure for contemporary law enforcement operations. Thompson Consulting Engineers provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design, Construction Administration, and Commissioning services, incorporating a geothermal HVAC system served by 108 wells, energy-efficient lighting, water-conservation measures, and other high-performance building strategies. The LEED Gold and ENERGY STAR-certified facility supports daily police operations, forensic investigations, community programs, and emergency preparedness while providing adaptable infrastructure capable of serving the County’s evolving public safety needs.
Challenges
- Designing reliable mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems capable of supporting both law enforcement operations and specialized forensic functions.
- Coordinating building systems within a highly secure facility that included evidence processing areas, forensic laboratories, administrative offices, training spaces, and public-access areas.
