Overview

The Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School is a specialized academic and workforce training facility supporting one of the nation’s longest-established shipbuilding apprenticeship programs. Developed to expand and modernize a program founded in 1919, the facility tripled the school’s instructional space and provides classrooms, eight computer labs, two video teleconferencing classrooms, a physics laboratory, and a 600-seat gymnasium to complement the hands-on training apprentices receive at Newport News Shipbuilding. Thompson Consulting Engineers provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services for the project, integrating building systems capable of supporting the facility’s diverse academic, technology, and assembly environments. The school continues to support the development of skilled craftspeople and future shipbuilding leaders through an educational model that combines technical instruction, craftsmanship, and leadership development.
